The Venus Grotto of Linderhof Castle, Germany
Linderhof was the smallest castle residence built between 1863 and 1886 by ‘Mad’ King Ludwig of Bavaria. This room was constructed to illustrate the first act of Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser (Ludwig was kind of obsessed), and had electrical wiring and lighting (in the nineteenth century, mind!) to illuminate the painted scenery and set different moods.
